Whilst the idea of change can be daunting, you can still take steps to reduce stress as much as possible. Below are a few of our top tips for reducing moving stress for all involved parties.

Children

As moving house tends to involve the lifting of heavy furniture and boxes, sending them to spend time with a friend or family member on the day can be a good way to keep them safe and let you focus solely on the logistics of moving. Reactions to moving can differ greatly among children so make sure you clearly communicate with them to make them aware of the process and give them the opportunity to voice any anxieties (even if they’re not there for the bulk of the move itself).

Pets

Unfamiliar rooms and smells can be stress-inducing to many pets so make sure to give them space to adjust and explore in their own time. Keep something with their scent on hand to introduce some familiarity to their surroundings.

Separate Your Essentials

Most people remember to pack clothes and toiletries in an overnight bag, but what about tools? Once you move into your new house, you may want to put up shelves, rebuild furniture, or do a bit of DIY so make sure your tools are clearly labelled and accessible. Scissors are also incredibly important for opening all the boxes you’ve diligently taped shut; there’s nothing worse than realising the scissors are in a box that you need said scissors to open!

It may also take a while to fully unpack your kitchen so it’s worth thinking about the tools, utensils, and crockery you’ll be using in the interim so you can store and pack them together.

Create a Plan

Plans don’t always go, for want of a better phrase, to plan but that doesn’t mean that having one is useless. Even something as simple as listing the order that things need doing can be a massive help. If setting up somewhere to sleep that first day is your priority then you may want to incorporate that into your plan so you don’t get sidetracked by another, less important task.

Get Help

From hiring removal men to volunteering friends and family members, having another person help you move and rearrange heavy furniture can massively help reduce stress, especially if you are moving alone.

And Breathe

Whether a full meditation session or a quick cup of tea, it’s important to take regular breaks during the process to stop and breathe before moving on to the next task.
